My son went through a fish-obsession phase which included watching a lot of fishing shows on youtube (Outdoor Boys was one of our favorites), walking to our neighborhood pond to catch catfish, and visiting aquariums. He did such a deep dive that he could even tell me if a salmon was male or female. He was only five!

When planning a trip to Hawaii, I sold the overnight layover in Seattle to my son as a chance to see the flying fish at Pike Place Fish Market. He was more excited about the fish market than going to Hawaii. We arrived at the market on a crisp December morning and walked past the original Starbucks and through an array of flower stalls before arriving at the first fish stand. A man in a large blue apron was standing in front of a menagerie of salmon parts. Since we were the only customers at that early hour, he immediately engaged Jude. He let Jude hold some of the fish and answered his many questions about the varieties of halibut, branzino, and crab on display. Since we had never been to the market before, I didn’t know that there was more than one fish market there…but did note that I didn’t see any fish flying through the air.

My son wasn’t bothered by the non-fish filled skies and proceeded to pick out a salmon to have shipped back to Mississippi. After we had selected some fish from the market to be shipped, we wandered through the rest of the market. It wasn’t long before we stumbled upon “the” Pike Place Fish Market and realized we had bought from a different fishmonger. But, sometimes plans go awry for a reason. The Pike Place Fish Market was packed and there is no way someone would have had 30 minutes to answer my son’s fifteen million questions much less pose with him for photos.

He asked if he could come work at City Fish Seafood Market when he got older! And, was delighted in his fish when it arrived at our house after we returned from Hawaii. This air fried salmon was the perfect use for our Seattle salmon. It is fast, delicious, and an easy weeknight dinner. Thank you City Fish for providing my son with such a memorable foodie experience.
